Betsy Devos – article recap

Just minutes before President Trump rescinded the federal policy allowing transgender students to use the bathroom of the gender they best identify with, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos met with the Education Department’s gay and transgender employee representative. Ms. DeVos warned the representative that her best efforts to oppose Trump’s actions had failed to protect the rights of transgender students. This failure is one of very few the astute politician has faced during her time as Secretary.

Since before her appointment to the Secretary of Education position, Betsy DeVos has been an active proponent for charter schools as well as a voucher program that would allow parents to use tax dollars to pay for private schools. DeVos was active in the development of charter schools in her home state of Michigan. She has a reputation as a driven woman who is relentless in her political endeavors.

DeVos is also not afraid to put her family’s money where her mouth is. Born wealthy, she increased her buying power by marrying billionaire Dick DeVos, whose family co-founded Amway. Gary Naeyaert, past director of a charter-school advocacy group stated this about the DeVos family, “You can’t swing a dead cat in Grand Rapids without hitting something with the [DeVos] name on it.” Among the family’s many holdings are a performance center, convention center, community center, children’s hospital, and a high school which was recently renamed the DeVos Center for Arts and Worship.

This all goes to prove that even the most astute politician with the best intentions face setbacks, but Betsy DeVos is not defeated by any stretch of the imagination. She continues to make a name for herself as an advocate for the country’s youth. Recently she visited a Washington-based all-girls charter school with First Lady Melania Trump and Jordan’s Queen Rania. She continued down to Florida to visit several Miami-area schools, including a private Christian school, a traditional public school, and a charter school founded by rapper Pitbull.
